Source Journal of King Saud University. Languages & Translation. Volume 14, No 1. (2002/1422)
Abstract This study deals with the problems involved in the translation of dramatic texts within the framework of the study of literary genres. The study comprises three principal sections. The first of these sections concerns the obvious interest of Israeli research institutions in the translation of literary works from Hebrew into Arabic, as a means of getting information about Arab societies, and learning about them intellectually, socially and politically. The second section focuses on the issues involved in the translation of dramatic texts, with particular emphasis on the specificity of translating dramatic works within the framework of literary translation, since translating dramatic text is both a linguistic translation and a translation of the dramatic mode itself. The third section deals with the Hebrew translation of "When Men Play." It starts with a discussion of the nature of Sa 'ad Allah Wannoos's theatre. It then focuses on the method adopted by the Hebrew translation. The translations method has influenced the dramatic mode and the rendering of scenes and dialogue.
