Abstract Extensive research reveals that the most effective strategy training explicitly teaches foreign language learners to evaluate the effectiveness of their learning. Moreover, several empirical investigations have been conducted into reading strategies and their relationships to successful and unsuccessful second language reading. These studies suggest that less competent learners may improve their skills through training in strategic; evidenced by more successful learners. Relatively little research on strategy training has been done in a foreign language context or, more specifically, in foreign language reading. The study reports on an on-going study undertaken at the University of Jordan Language Center on the contribution of metacognitive strategy training in EFL remedial reading courses. The reason for undertaking the study is to describe the step-by-step implementation of a new strategy training program in reading and to discuss some pedagogical implications pertaining to EFL remedial courses.
