Abstract . This paper addresses the issue of new towns in Saudi Arabia, their historical trends and their crucial role in the national spatial development process. The analysis defines the objectives and the expected role of new towns within the context of the long-term goals of the national development and the guidelines of the National Spatial Development Strategy. It also examines the extent new towns have realized their objectives, in terms of their impacts on the national and regional development. The paper then examines the future prospects of new towns and their expected role in promoting sustainable development. Using the new industrial city to be established in the Sudair district as an illustration, the paper concluded that in Saudi Arabia, new towns will continue to be an effective instrument in achieving sustainable development. New towns have been promoting a concentrated dispersion of population and economic activities on the national space. This is a cost-effective approach in the utilization of natural resources and the integration of national space.
