Abstract . It is not a surprise to note that ancient and modern scholars alike have clung to the same picture of Taima’ as the one presented in history or in ancient Arabic poetry. The only picture of this city presented in these sources coincides indeed with what may be called the "Hijazi Taima’", that is with one of the many ancient cities bearing the same name which used to exist in the Arabian Peninsula and of which we have some archeological, religious as well as poetic evidence. However, ancient sources, including Bibliocolones, do not seem to determine which one of these many “Taimas” is meant in poems orally transmitted by such reporters as al-Musawwar al-Anzi, Hammad al-Rawiyah, al-Mufaddal al-Dabbi and Khalaf al-Ahmar or by genealogists such as Ibn al-Kalbi. It is the purpose of the present paper to try and shed light on some aspects of this controversial issue. |
