Abstract. Arabization is a major issue in higher education development and reform. While it is an established fact that faculties are better expressed, and creative abilities better developed through one’s native language, the use of a foreign language in scientific instruction is believed to have a negative impact on the training of a specialized scientific and technical work force, and on the activities of scientific research, which are crucial factors for overall national development. In this context, the present paper investigates the reality of Arabization in the science colleges at Umm Al-Qura University. The paper specifically investigates: (a) language conflict (Arabic vs. English) in teaching, evaluation, and research, (b) student and faculty views on the educational, cultural and developmental aspects of Arabization, and (c) the problems as well as the requirements of the implementation of Arabization in the context of the overall planning and development of higher education. |
