Abstract Although there is a rich text about mosques and their architecture in the old Islamic literature, but unfortunately it is not fully considered by most Moslems in general and architects and other professionals who are responsible of design and construction of mosques in particular. The present study aims to review the available literature for the general principles that should be taken into account by design and building professionals. In this regard the sayings of "Allah" in the holy "Quran" and the teachings of his messenger peace up-on him in "Sunah" about mosques and their architecture and construction were investigated. Explanations of both "Quran" and "Sunah" by old and present Moslem scholars were also considered. The study , concludes that there are at least five principles which should be considered and followed. They are as follows: the purificqtion of the intention; the conformity of the approach to Shariaa; the differenciation of the form from the other religious/ nonŽMuslim buildings and the perfection of the design, construction and maintenance.
