Abstract At the outset this study examine the motives of the Abbasids in creatng a satalite state in Afriqiyah and parts of the Middle Maghrib after several abortive attempts, and also the Abbasid unlimited support for their wali (amir) of this state in the face of stiff resistence from the Arab army. The Aghlahids Amirs were loyal to the Abbasids establishment and they served as a puffer state in Afriqiyyah and middle Maghrib carrying out the Abbasids policies towards the Kharijites ,the Idrisids and the Umayyads of Spain. Last but not least the author will deal with the alleged pact reached between the Caliph Harun al-Rashid and Ibrahim b. alAghlab to stibulate the financial relation between autonimous Ibn al-Aghlab and the Caliphate, and the reason behind the Aghlabid attachment to this myth even after the decline of Caliph’s authority.
