Abstract
As a literary mode of expression and interpretation, allegory has been a matter of much controversy in modern studies of literature. Since the main emphasis has often been on a theory of allegory without an account of its historical origin and development, this has led to some serious misconception. This paper approaches allegory in a historical context and thus shows its rise and development from antiquity to the Renaissance, when it attained its literary and artistic maturity.
