Abstract
This article represents an attempt to shed light on a little-known work by the famous 8th! 14th century scholar, Ibn PadlAllah aI- 'Umari, compiler of the encyclopedicMasalikal-Absa~ The work in question - entitled Dlwhabiyyat al- 'Asr- is shown to have been a compilation of biographies of al- 'Umari's illustrious contempora ries. Prom the surviving manuscript copy of the initial two pages of this work, the author has attempted to de-scribe its structure, and from the third part of the book, surviving from another manuscript, more details emerge of al- 'Umari's methodology.
