| Abstract |
The aim ofthis paper is to trace the literary critical ideas of both Mahmud Sami al-Barudi and Ahmed Shawqi as stated in their introductions to their diwans, in order to form a distinct poetic conception for each poet. The two introductions have not yet been given what they deserve of critical and exclusive studies. Al-Barudi concentrates in his poetics on the essence of poetry and its spirit, the poetic language, and the moral aim of poetry. On the other hand, Shawqi's poetics consists of two main parts: The first deals with the function of poetry, its subjects and fields, the negative influence of practicing poetry as a profession, and the poetic talent and other skills that the poet must acquire. The second discusses the issues ofrenovating and modernizing poetry, experi-menting with new poetic genres, and his attitude toward Western literature. Their ideas will be compared with similar ones in traditional Arabic critical books and, on the other hand, with their practice of poetry. The paper concludes with reference to the impact of their ideas on contemporary and later poets. |
