| Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to provide a thorough analysis of the marriage system in Qutrana, a southern Jordanian town, including spouse selection, marriage pattern, polygamy, dowry, divorce. The study offers a demographic characterization of the randomly -selected 125 family sample - focusing on the father of the family - with respect to age, level of education, occupation and income. The findings of the study indicate the persistence of such characteristics as family - planned marriages, endogamy, high dowry, elevated rates of di-vorce, preference of male offspring and large family size. No positive attitudes are shown to obtain towards exogamy, decrease in the desire of having more males, divorce and small family size. The study reveals that the Qutrana community faces certain marriage problems, most noteworthy among which are the dominance of en-dogamy, polygamy and large family size. |
