Title The Rentier State in Qatar: A Study on Determinants of the Formation of Rentier State
Source Journal of King Saud University. Administrative Sciences. Volume 11, No 2. (1999/1419)
Abstract In view of the fact that there are disagreements on the main theoretical features which determine the formation of the rentier state, this study articulated a theoretical model for this subject. The theoretical model that has been adopted, after reviewing different studies, is one which contends that the articulation of the rentier state requires four essential bases: (I) the original of the rent must be external; (2)the predominance of the rentier sector whithin the whole economy; (3) the state ownership of the rentier sector; and (4) the rentier revenue must represent a large proportion of government income. In addition, this study applied the model to analyze the case study of the oil- rentier state in Qatar.
