The study focuses onjob characteristics and the perceived level of job-related stress. Specifically, the study tries to answer the following questions: I) What is the perceived level of work-related stress in government agencies? 2) How do employees perceived their job characteristics at work? 3) Is there a relationship between demographic factors, perception toward job characteristics, and level of job stress? 4) What are the factors influencing the level of work-related stress? To answer these questions, a non-probability sample of 505 employees from various public agencies representing all different organizational levels participated in the study. Results showed that the level of job stress is Iow and that most employees agreed that their jobs are important and provide them with skill varieties, autonomy and feedback. However, employees are divided regarding work identity. Concerning the relationship between demographic factors, job characteristics and level of work stress, the findings showed that there is a significant negative relationship between all job characteristics and the perceived level of work stress. In addition, negative correlations exist between age, rank, work experience and the level of stress. Results also showed that work identity, job autonomy, and work experience are the factors that influence the perceived level of job-related stress. The study ended with some recommendations. |
