Title Sources of Functional Stress: A Field Study on Opinions of Employees Working in Jordanian National Electricity Company

Abstract Northern Region district towards main functional stress sources that they face, affect their performance, and how they are affected by variables of: gender, age, social status, educational qualifications, job, experience, shift, and salary. The sample consisted of90 employees at Al Aghwar distribution department in Jordan. After analyzing data via spsslpc; it was found that the level of stress on employees was moderate with a mean (2.88) and also there appeared no statistical differences between sources of stress referred to age, social status, and salary, except "responsibility towards others" within salary range JO 301-450. Also it was found that employees having the least education were suffering stress because of "role vagueness" and "qualitative role load". Also it was found that managers and heads of divisions were sufffering stress resulting from "role conflict" and "responsibility towards others". Also it appeared that employees of supportive works suffered stress because of "role vagueness", and those with experience of6-1O years suffered "qualitative role load" more than others. Hence it appeared that lack of delegated authority, work within contradictory policies, lack of opportunity for progress, employee feeling of steady position, and routine work are the main reasons causing stress. The study further showed statistical positive relationships among sources of stress and it showed order of sources of stress as fol1ows: professional progress, "responsibility towards others", "organization", quantitative role load, role conflict, qualitative role load, and role vagueness, respectively. Final1y the study presented some recommendations to increase employees awareness of stress, its reasons, and how to face and al1eviate it.
