Abstract Prototype school designs constitute a large proportion of schools constructed, or under construction, by the Ministry of Education. On the other hand, we encounter a small, and yet a growing, number of non-prototype school designs built by the private sector. This study intends to measure the influence of prototype school designs, and their affiliation to either government or private sectors, on schools performance of their functions. The scope of measurement include physical, operational, and impressionistic criteria based on a field study conducted on a sample of both government and private schools in the city of Riyadh. It is expected that the findings of this study would contribute to highlight the major design and operational attributes for the schools of both sectors, with more emphasis being given to the difference between the government’s prototype versus the private sector’s non-prototype. Accordingly, it is expected that such differences in school designs’ attributes would influence their functional performance, and consequently future plans for school buildings’ design and construction.
