Title The Attributes of Change in School Buildings
Source Journal of King Saud University. Architecture & Planning. Volume 6, No 1. (1994/1414)
Abstract The number of boys’ schools for general education, operated by the Ministry of Education, have risen from 4604 in 1400 H. to 7224 n 1410 H. This represents an increase of 57% over a period of one decade. The government owned buildings accommodated a sizeable portion of such an increase, while rented houses were utilized to house the remainng newly opened schools or simply to replace other rented buildings. This study aims at identifying the differences between school buildings built during the period from 1400 to 1410 H. with those built before 1400 H. The study will concentrate on measuring the difference in school buildings’ performance for the two time periods according to a set of school elements, contents, general characteristics, and the extent of achieving educational goals by those schools. The study intends to accomplish this task by conducting a field survey of a sample covering 15% of all boys’ schools in Saudi Arabia. It is expected that the results of this study will contribute to identifying aspects of success and failure for last decade’s schools(l400 - 1410) compared to the period prior to that, and what effect should those aspects carry for present and future school buildings. Such results should have a special importance for those working in the field of school planning and design, in addition to architects & educators in general.
