| Abstract |
Since the time of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), al-Manakhah is recognized as the main square and market of al-Madinah al-Munawarah. This main open space represents an important urban element which is closely related to aLMadinah. The article therefore describes and identifies al- Manakhah area and defines its history and location on a map prepared by the Egyptian Surveying Department in 1371 A.H.1951 AD. It also includes a comprehensive description of the religious, administrative, commercial and defensive major urban elements of al-Manakhah. In this part, the article concentrates on the peculiar markets and their specialities. This study also analyses the space structure of al-Manakhah which is divided into eight major spaces, and defines their functions and realtions with one another and with the city as a whole. Finally, the study describes the existing condition of al-Manakhah, the changes which have been affected by the Prophet Mosque, and defines its location on the development plan of the Mosque’s surroundings. |
