Title The Translation of Arabic Rhetorical Devices into Russian as illustrated by Al-Hariri’s Maqāmāt
Source Journal of King Saud University. Languages & Translation. Volume 16, No 1. (2004/1424)
Abstract It is commonly acknowledged that al-Hariri’s Maqāmāt illustrate one of the finest stages of linguistic sophistication that Arabic prose style has reached in its long history. This explains the deep interest shown in al-Hariri’s Maqāmāt by European scholars who translated these into English, German, French, Russian and other European languages. Yet, the rendering into another language of an Arabic text such as al-Hariri’s Maqāmāt represents a very difficult challenge because of the rich variety of complex rhetorical devices employed by the author. The purpose of the present paper is to examine the extent to this task which was achieved in various Russian translations of al-Hariri’s Maqāmāt.
