| Abstract |
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has witnessed great expansion in the field of economical development during the recent period. Built upon the enormous growth in resources, with the Kingdom's commitment to wisdom and reasonability policy, remarkable changes have been made with big influences in the social and economical lifestyle in the country. The Kingdom has given priority to quantity and quality expansion of education in the last seven five-year development plans. Despite the low percentage of Saudi women working in the labour force in the Kingdom compared to advanced modern countries or even other developing countries, it is the unavailability of working sectors open for Saudi women – usually limited to education and medicine - which has caused some saturation in these sectors. That concentration is most prominent in the education sector generally and the higher education sector specially which is considered the top of the educational pyramid. This has reflected on the continuous pressure on the working woman's transportation means from the residence, or what is known as "origin", to the work location "destination". Most of the working women are faced with great challenges in their efforts to reach these establishments and return from them daily. From here the idea of preparing a study about the issue of "Transporting Working Women" first originated. This study aims to note the present situation of the available working women's transportation means in Saudi Arabia, and connect it with the most immportant factors in choosing the transportation method for the daily two-way trip between the origin and destination, all that as a part of a series of geographical studies focusing on the transportation of working women in Saudi Arabia from all viewpoints according to fixed-time schedule. |
